  • Active since the 1980s, this association was formally re-constituted in the United States of American in 2006 to reactivate the international association created in the 1980s by Pat Dougherty (Canada/USA).

  • The association's mandate is to help connect the international community of Doherty clanfolk.

  • Membership is open to anyone, anywhere named, or having interest in the name ÓDochartaigh (Doherty)...and its approximately 150 variants. Membership is by annual dues.

  • Main activities are Doherty-related genealogy, websites, newsletters, DNA research and support for the international reunion in Ireland.

Mission and Objectives (2005)

The ÓDochartaigh Clann Association, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as the “Association”), has been formed to enrich the lives of those wishing to learn more about their Irish heritage .  The Association will initially focus its efforts on the ancient clan Ó Dochartaigh and on the Inishowen Peninsula of County Donegal,Ireland.  In the future, as time and resources permit, the Association will expand its efforts to include other clans, starting with those closely linked to Clann ÓDochartaigh, and to other geographical areas, starting with the remainder of County Donegal and County Derry.

 

Specifically, the Association will:

  1. Share geneological data
    Collect, organize, maintain, archive and share genealogical data on all individuals descending from ÓDochartaigh families by right of birth, adoption or fosterage;
  2. Gather clan and Irish  information
    Collect and maintain a database of information related to Clann ÓDochartaigh, Inishowen, Donegal and Ireland in general, including a database of members and member information;
  3. Host a website
    Maintain an Association website on which members can find and exchange information about genealogy, Irish culture, Irish history and other related topics;
  4. Publish a newsletter
    Publish an Association newsletter on at least a semi-annual basis;
  5. Help save relics
    Assist, where possible, in researching, discovering, restoring, protecting and purchasing relics, archeological finds, ancient artifacts and antiques that may relate to Clann ÓDochartaigh;
  6. Keep a clan history
    Compile, document and publish the history of Clann ÓDochartaigh;
  7. Maintain memorials
    Construct and maintain memorials for persons and sites connected to Clann ÓDochartaigh;
  8. Encourage social events
    Promote comradery amongst the members of Clann ÓDochartaigh by encouraging social events, reunions and other gatherings on a local basis and at least every five years on a worldwide scale in Ireland;
  9. Promote Irish tourism
    Promote tourism in Ireland , especially in Inishowen and those areas of Donegal and Derry that are closely linked to Clann ÓDochartaigh, to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of our related clans and our Irish heritage.
