My grandmother, Rose Dougherty, whose father was from Malin Head area, had seven brothers and one sister. All of her seven brothers had RED hair up until they were in their twenties.

I think that red hair is a prominent trait of the Dohertys. My father Hugh Doherty (Co. Leitrim) had red hair as well as 2 of my nephews. I had auburn highlights as well as one of my cousins.

I come from a Doherty line in which the red hair gene is unfortunately at least dormant. However, I do descend from Dohertys in County Leitrim and Hugh seemed to be a family name. What part of County Leitrim does your father originate from?

I come from an area with a high percentage of Dohertys (Clonmany, Co. Donegal), and funnily enough I can't think of even one offhand that has red hair! Red hair isn't all that common here anyhow, but all the red heads I can think of have other surnames.

i think it is a very common trait in the Dougherty clan to have red hair, both me and my sister have cinimon collored hair as well as most our cousins but they are on our O'hara side of the family.

I've traveled to Ireland several times on my own and have taken college groups of students twice. We've all noticed--and commented on--the fact that very few Irish of any name today seem to have red hair.
My Daughertys have been in America (Virginia, then North Carolina, then Kentucky) since about 1670. Literally NONE of them that I have known personally--or have seen pictures of--have had red hair. Pretty weird, huh, since that's our stereotype of the Irish?
The only redheads I've had in my ancestry have been the Proctors, who came from Northern Ireland, but were, I think, British.

hi. i'm a Daugherty and haven't seen that much red hair in my family... mine is reddish blonde. However, reading over the posts here, i remember that in jr. high school, i sat next to a girl named DOHERTY (bridget, i think) and her hair was flaming red, as was her younger brothers. Let's see--we were all american military brats who's fathers were both stationed on post at West Point, NY, the us military academy.
It was definitely 1978-79, but i had moved a million times before and since.... I'll try to remember more details about these Dohertys for ye. :) I think, like my own father, that her dad was a Colonel at that time, but did make a Generals rank within ten years after. he was bald, so i'm can't vouch for his hair color.... but the kids both had flaming red heads of hair. Oh, blahter.. you guys probably already know them since they're Dohertys. :) DOes that help at all?

Hmm. What i now about the Dohertys in West Point, NY when i was there. They came in 1978 and stayed several years. The kids both had flaming red hair... and our teacher assigned bridgit (i think that was her name) to sit near me because we had the same basic last name. I remember her as being very nice and well-mannered. She was a bit taken aback by me, because she was such a good girl, and although i was a "bookworm," I was a bit wild--safety pins in my ears... the whole bit. I'm bringing this up because i distinctly remember talking to her dad about being a "daugherty/doherty." He had brought it up, and said said that he had a copy of the family crest. I told him about the dinner glasse that my parents had special-made in dresden with the "hart" (stag) etched on the crystal. He liked the thought of that... even as i spoke to him as a 12 year old with a safety pins poking through my ear. ( i dye hair red sometimes... flaming red eh?)
See, these Dohertys were alll very nice people...
